Aluminum roofing in North Carolina

Aluminum roofing is a strong fit for North Carolina homes: it does not rust in coastal salt air, holds up to long humid summers, and weighs a fraction of slate. Metal Roof NC installs Interlock® aluminum roofs from Raleigh to the coast. It costs more up front than asphalt or steel, and that is the trade-off.

What is an Interlock® aluminum roof?

An Interlock® aluminum roof is a system of heavy-gauge aluminum panels that lock to each other on all four sides, with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface, so there are no exposed screw heads or rubber washers to age in North Carolina sun.

The panels are made in North America by Interlock Roofing and sold and installed in North Carolina by Metal Roof NC, an authorized Interlock aluminum roofing dealer based in Raleigh. Panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile, or rolled as standing seam.

Why choose aluminum roofing in North Carolina?

Aluminum roofing suits North Carolina because it handles the four things that wear out roofs here: coastal salt air, long hot and humid summers, tropical-storm wind and rain, and Piedmont hail and ice. Here is how it answers each one, and where it doesn't.

Salt air on the coast

Aluminum does not rust. It forms a thin oxide film that slows further oxidation (ASM International), and there is no steel core for salt spray in Wilmington, Morehead City, Beaufort or New Bern to reach at a cut edge or a scratch. It is corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof: flashings and fasteners still have to be compatible metals.

Heat and humidity

Interlock's Alunar® finish is a 70% PVDF coating (AAMA 2605) in CRRC-rated colors, and the Alunar® coating is warranted 30 years. Long, humid summers are when dark streaks show up on asphalt roofs across the Triangle and the coast; a smooth, factory-finished aluminum panel has no granule surface to hold that moisture and debris.

Hurricanes and tropical storms

The panels interlock on four sides, and wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is immune to hurricane damage. Parts of coastal North Carolina sit in design wind zones of 130 mph and above under the NC Residential Code (NC OSFM), and your permit office or engineer sets the requirement for your house. See hurricane-resistant roofing.

Weight

Aluminum weighs roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per sq ft installed, depending on profile, a fraction of natural slate or concrete tile. That matters on older Piedmont farmhouses and coastal homes where the framing may not be sized for a heavy roof.

Hail and dents (the honest part)

Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating under the Delta Building Products listing, tested by Intertek. Class 4 is about the roof not cracking or leaking under impact; aluminum can still dent cosmetically in a severe Piedmont hailstorm, and cosmetic dents are not the same as a failed roof. Ask how your insurer treats cosmetic damage.

Ice storms

The State Climate Office of NC calls the western Piedmont the iciest part of the Southeast, with Charlotte and the Triad among the hotspots. Aluminum absorbs no water for ice to work on, and the interlocked panels have no tabs for ice-laden branches to tear loose.

Which aluminum roofing profiles and colors are available in NC?

Five aluminum profiles are available: Slate (the most popular), Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, plus Solid Copper for bays, porches and accents. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope. Colors: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown, Tudor Brown and Sierra Tan.

Slate and Cedar Shingle suit the brick Colonials and Craftsman homes of Raleigh, Durham and Cary; Shake suits coastal cottages; Standing Seam suits farmhouse and modern designs. Standing seam has a trade-off worth knowing: wide flat pans can show oil-canning, a slight waviness in the flat of the panel that is cosmetic. Two neighboring Durham homes finished in July 2023 chose the Slate profile in Deep Charcoal.

In Triangle and Charlotte subdivisions, the homeowners association's architectural review committee usually approves roof material and color before work starts. We provide samples, color charts and product documents for that application.

How much does aluminum roofing cost in North Carolina?

Metal Roof NC's rule of thumb is that an Interlock aluminum roof typically costs about 2.5 to 3 times a traditional asphalt-shingle roof. Prices vary job to job with roof size, pitch, tear-off and other conditions, and an on-site estimate is required for an accurate price.

That is the main trade-off. A painted-steel roof usually costs less up front than aluminum, and asphalt costs less still. Aluminum makes the most sense on a house you plan to keep. Financing is available through Service Finance for qualified homeowners, subject to lender approval and terms. See metal roof cost in NC.

What warranty comes with an aluminum roof?

  • Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty from Interlock Roofing: material and finish, for the original purchaser while they own the home, transferable once (the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion). Workmanship is excluded.
  • Alunar® coating warranted 30 years.
  • Metal Roof NC 5-Year Labor Warranty, covering workmanship for five years.
  • Wind resistance warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.
  • Class A Fire Rated Available. When installed with two layers of GAF VersaShield® underlayment over a 15/32-inch plywood deck, the Interlock roof assembly can achieve a Class A fire rating (ASTM E108 / UL 790).

Questions, answered

Who installs aluminum roofing in North Carolina?

Metal Roof NC, an authorized Interlock aluminum roofing dealer based in Raleigh, installs Interlock® aluminum roofs across the Triangle, the Charlotte area, the Triad and Piedmont, and the coast from Wilmington to Beaufort.

Is aluminum roofing good near the North Carolina coast?

Yes. Salt air attacks steel wherever its coating is cut or scratched. Aluminum has no steel inside to rust; its oxide film protects it. It is corrosion-resistant rather than corrosion-proof, so flashings and fasteners must be compatible metals.

Will an aluminum roof survive a hurricane?

No roof is immune to hurricane damage. Interlock panels lock on four sides with concealed fasteners, and wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. Some coastal areas have higher design wind speeds; the permit office or engineer sets the requirement for your house.

Is aluminum roofing better than steel?

Aluminum does not rust and weighs about a third as much as steel. Steel usually costs less up front and resists dents better at the same thickness. Near the coast, or on a house you plan to keep, aluminum is usually the longer-lived choice.

Does an aluminum roof dent from hail?

It can. Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating (Delta Building Products listing, tested by Intertek), which addresses cracking and leaks, but large hail can leave cosmetic dents in aluminum.

How much does an aluminum roof cost in NC?

Metal Roof NC's rule of thumb is that an Interlock aluminum roof typically costs about 2.5 to 3 times a traditional asphalt-shingle roof. Prices vary job to job with roof size, pitch, tear-off and other conditions; an on-site estimate is required for an accurate price.

Does my HOA have to approve a metal roof?

Often, yes. Many Triangle and Charlotte-area communities require architectural review before a roof material or color change. Check your declaration and design guidelines; we supply samples and product documents for the application.

Is an aluminum roof noisy in the rain?

Installed over a solid roof deck and underlayment, as Interlock residential roofs are, it is not the drumming of bare metal over open framing.
