How to check a roofer is really local in North Carolina

A real local roofer has a North Carolina street address you can find on a map, a person who answers a local number, a business registration under its legal name, a contractor license you can look up when the job is $40,000 or more, current insurance certificates, finished jobs near you, and a written contract that names the company doing the work. Eight checks, about ten minutes.

Why does it matter whether a roofer is local?

Because the company that sells you the roof should be the one you can find when something needs fixing. Some roofing websites aren't roofing companies: they collect your details and sell the lead to whoever pays for it. After a hurricane or hailstorm, crews also arrive from out of state and leave when the work dries up. Ten minutes of checking tells you who you are actually dealing with.

1. Can you find a real North Carolina street address?

A local company can tell you where its office is. Look for a street address in North Carolina, not just a list of towns it "serves", and look it up on a map. A website with only a contact form and no address is a reason to ask more questions.

2. Does a person answer a local phone number?

A roofer working in your area will usually answer on a North Carolina number, and someone there should know the towns around you. A toll-free number on its own doesn't mean anything is wrong, but it doesn't tell you where the company is.

3. Is the business registered in North Carolina?

Search the legal name on your quote in the NC Secretary of State's business registration search at sosnc.gov. Match the legal name to the contract, the license and the insurance certificate. A dba (trade name) should lead back to the legal entity.

4. If the job is $40,000 or more, is the contractor licensed?

Under G.S. 87-1, anyone who undertakes a building project costing $40,000 or more is a general contractor and must be licensed by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. Search the board's licensee lookup at nclbgc.org. Below $40,000 no NCLBGC license is required, so the other checks on this page carry more weight.

5. Can the roofer show current insurance?

Ask for liability and workers' compensation certificates sent directly from the insurer or broker. The NC Industrial Commission says employers with three or more employees must carry workers' compensation, and its Insurance Coverage Search lets you check a business yourself.

6. Where are the company's recent jobs?

A company with a real record near you can name the towns, show photos of finished roofs close to your house and put you in touch with past customers. Stock photos and reviews with no town attached tell you nothing.

7. Does the contract name the company that does the work?

The estimate, the contract and the warranty should all name the same legal company: the one that installs the roof. If you sign at home with a salesperson who came to you, North Carolina law (G.S. 14-401.13) gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel a purchase of $25 or more, and the seller must give you written notice of that right. The NC Department of Insurance adds: never sign a contract with blanks, and never pay in full up front.

8. If they say they're an authorized dealer, will the manufacturer confirm it?

Ask the manufacturer, not the salesperson. For Interlock, contact Interlock Roofing through interlockroofing.com and ask whether the company on your quote is an authorized Interlock dealer.

Questions, answered

How can I tell if a roofing website is a real local company?

Look for a North Carolina street address you can find on a map, a person who answers a local number, a business registration under the same legal name at the NC Secretary of State, insurance certificates from the insurer, and finished jobs in towns near you. A lead-generation site usually can't show all five.

Do roofers need a license in North Carolina?

For jobs of $40,000 or more, yes: under G.S. 87-1 the contractor must be licensed by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. You can search licensees at nclbgc.org. Below that amount no NCLBGC license is required.

How do I check a contractor's workers' compensation coverage in NC?

Use the NC Industrial Commission's Insurance Coverage Search, and ask for a certificate sent directly from the insurer. The Commission says employers with three or more employees must carry workers' compensation.

How do I avoid storm chasers after a hurricane?

Be wary of door-knockers who point out damage you didn't know about, pressure to sign that day, demands for full or cash payment, and offers to handle your insurance claim. Call your insurer before you sign, get more than one estimate, and check the company's address, registration and insurance.
