Cedar shake roof replacement in North Carolina

Keep the look of cedar and lose the upkeep: Interlock® aluminum Shake and Cedar Shingle profiles, installed across North Carolina by Metal Roof NC, an authorized Interlock aluminum roofing dealer.

Why do cedar shake roofs wear out in North Carolina?

Cedar wears out in North Carolina because it holds water through long, humid summers. Shaded roofs under pines and hardwoods stay damp, grow moss and algae, and the shakes cup, split and rot; near the coast, salt air and tropical-storm rain add to it. Keeping cedar going means regular cleaning and re-treating. Aluminum absorbs no water, does not rot and does not rust in salt air.

A cedar roof always comes off before an Interlock® roof goes on. The tear-off is in the project-specific estimate from the start.

Can I keep the cedar look with a metal roof?

Yes. Interlock's Shake profile has deep, hand-split shadow lines; the Cedar Shingle profile has the flatter look of a sawn cedar roof, common on coastal cottages and older Piedmont homes. Both are aluminum, lock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and weigh roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot depending on profile, less than the cedar they replace once it has soaked up a season of rain.

Colors include Colonial Brown, Tudor Brown and Sierra Tan for a natural wood tone. If your subdivision has an architectural review committee, get its approval before you sign; we bring samples and product documents for that application.

Is an aluminum roof safer than cedar for fire?

It can be, as a rated assembly. Class A Fire Rated Available. When installed with two layers of GAF VersaShield® underlayment over a 15/32-inch plywood deck, the Interlock roof assembly can achieve a Class A fire rating (ASTM E108 / UL 790). The rating belongs to the assembly, not to the panel alone, and no roof is immune to fire.

How does a replacement roof handle storms?

Interlock panels lock on four sides with concealed fasteners, and wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is immune to hurricane damage, and coastal design wind requirements are set by the code and your permit office. See hurricane-resistant roofing.

What does it cost, and what is covered?

Metal Roof NC's rule of thumb is that an Interlock aluminum roof typically costs about 2.5 to 3 times a traditional asphalt-shingle roof. Prices vary job to job with roof size, pitch, tear-off and other conditions, and an on-site estimate is required for an accurate price. See metal roof cost.

The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty from Interlock Roofing covers material and finish for the original purchaser while they own the home, transferable once; the Alunar® coating is warranted 30 years; and the Metal Roof NC 5-Year Labor Warranty covers workmanship for five years.

Questions, answered

Is aluminum a good replacement for cedar shakes in NC?

Yes, for most homes. The Shake and Cedar Shingle profiles keep the look without the rot, splitting, moss and re-treatment that humid North Carolina summers bring, at roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot.

Will it look like real cedar?

From the street it reads as a shake or shingle roof. We bring samples and colors to the visit so you can judge it against your house and your HOA's guidelines.

Can you roof over my cedar shakes?

No. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the tear-off is in the estimate.

How fire-resistant is a metal roof?

It depends on the assembly; no roof is immune to fire. Class A Fire Rated Available. When installed with two layers of GAF VersaShield® underlayment over a 15/32-inch plywood deck, the Interlock roof assembly can achieve a Class A fire rating (ASTM E108 / UL 790).

How do I get a price?
