Roof replacement in North Carolina

Replace an asphalt, cedar or slate roof in North Carolina with the Interlock aluminum roofing system, installed by Metal Roof NC, an authorized Interlock dealer. A project-specific estimate before work begins, NC permit rules explained, and timing around hurricane season.

What does a roof replacement with Metal Roof NC involve?

It starts when you request an estimate. We measure the roof, look at the deck and framing where we can, go through profiles and colors with you, and you get a project-specific estimate before work begins. Anything that needs attention underneath goes into that estimate, not into a surprise later.

On install day the old roof comes off where it has to, the deck is repaired and prepared, and the Interlock aluminum roofing system goes on: panels that interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners, so there is no exposed screw head or loose tab for wind or wind-driven rain to work on. Metal Roof NC installs; Interlock Roofing manufactures the system. We also replace roofs with standing seam metal and conventional asphalt shingles.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in North Carolina?

Often not, for a straight re-roof of a single-family home. Under G.S. 160D-1110(c), no building permit is required for work costing $40,000 or less on a single-family residence done to the NC State Building Code, unless it involves load-bearing structure or one of the other listed exceptions. The State Fire Marshal's office reads the roofing exemption as covering replacement of the roofing and up to 15% of the existing roof deck.

A job over $40,000, more deck replacement than that, structural repairs or a local requirement can mean a permit from your county or city inspections department. The work still has to meet the NC Residential Code either way, including its reroofing rules (Section R908). The 2018 edition remains in force until the delayed 2024 edition takes effect, according to the Office of State Fire Marshal.

Does the old roof have to come off?

Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off. A single layer of asphalt shingles may be roofed over only if an inspection finds it suitable and the local code allows it: no rot, no soft decking, nothing trapped underneath that should come out. If it isn't suitable, the tear-off is in the estimate from the start.

How long does a roof replacement take?

It depends on the roof, so we give you an estimated install window with your estimate rather than a promise. What moves it: the size and pitch of the roof, the number of layers coming off, how much deck needs repair, dormers, valleys and chimneys, access to the house, permit or HOA approval if needed, material lead time, and weather. Summer thunderstorms and tropical systems can pause a tear-off for a day or more.

When is the best time to replace a roof in North Carolina?

Before hurricane season if you can. The Atlantic season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the National Hurricane Center puts its peak on September 10, so planning in winter or spring and installing before late summer avoids racing a storm with an open roof. A roof that is already failing shouldn't wait for a season. More on storm-ready roofs: hurricane-resistant roofing in NC.

What profiles can replace asphalt, cedar or slate?

Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam profiles, plus Solid Copper, give you the look you want at roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot, a fraction of the weight of slate or concrete tile. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope. In a subdivision with an architectural review committee, check the HOA's rules before you choose a profile and color; we provide product sheets and samples for that review.

Which warranties come with the new roof?

The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers material and finish for the original purchaser while they own the home, and transfers once: the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion. Workmanship is excluded from that warranty; the installation is covered by the Metal Roof NC 5-Year Labor Warranty. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. Read the full terms before you sign: warranties.

How do I check a roofer before I sign?

For jobs of $40,000 or more, North Carolina requires a general contractor license (G.S. 87-1). Check insurance certificates, get the contract in writing and keep deposits tied to work done. The full checklist: how to choose metal roofing contractors in NC.
