Metal Roofing in the Triangle: Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Nearby
Metal Roof NC installs Interlock aluminum and standing seam metal roofs across the Triangle, from its base in Raleigh out to Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Apex and Wake Forest. This is the dealer's home region, and the city pages below go into each town's storms, housing and permit office.
What Weather Shapes a Triangle Roof?
Summer heat first. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals put the July average high at Raleigh-Durham International at 90.8°F, with 46.07 inches of precipitation a year. Then the storms that come a few times a decade: hurricanes that hold together inland, spring tornadoes, hail and winter ice.
Which Storms Have Hit the Triangle Hardest?
Hurricane Fran in September 1996 caused more than $900 million in residential and commercial damage in Wake County alone, according to NWS Raleigh. On April 16, 2011, the Sanford-Raleigh tornado stayed on the ground for 67 miles and left a path of EF-2 damage through Raleigh. The December 2002 ice storm coated parts of the Piedmont, Durham included, with a half inch to an inch of ice.
Why Does Tree Cover Matter Here?
Older Triangle neighborhoods sit under tall pines and hardwoods. In Fran and in the 2002 ice storm, falling trees and limbs did much of the roof damage. A metal roof will not stop a falling oak, but interlocking panels with concealed fasteners have no shingle tabs for wind to lift, and debris from smaller branches slides off more readily than it lodges.
What About HOAs and Historic Districts?
Much of the newer housing in Cary, Apex, Wake Forest and the suburbs is in subdivisions with homeowners associations. If yours has an architectural review committee, get its approval for the profile and color before you schedule work. Raleigh's Historic Overlay Districts and landmarks have their own review through the Raleigh Historic Development Commission.
Who Pulls the Permit?
Each Triangle town runs its own inspections office: Raleigh, Durham (city and county together), Cary, Chapel Hill, Apex and Wake Forest all have their own. State law requires a building permit for single-family work over $40,000, and the city pages below link each office.
