What is the Interlock roofing system?
Interlock roofing is an aluminum roofing system made of panels that lock to each other on all four sides, with the fasteners concealed under the panel above, so nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are formed to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile, or rolled as standing seam, and the system weighs roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot depending on profile.
It is manufactured by Interlock Roofing in Delta, British Columbia, and sold as Made in North America. Interlock Roofing makes the panels and issues the material warranty; in North Carolina, Metal Roof NC sells and installs them as an authorized Interlock dealer (about the dealer).
Why aluminum instead of steel?
It does not rust
Aluminum has no steel inside it. A thin oxide film protects the metal, so it is corrosion-resistant in salt air, which matters from Wilmington to Beaufort.
It is light
Roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile: a fraction of the weight of concrete tile or natural slate.
The fasteners stay dry
Each panel interlocks on four sides and covers the fasteners of the panel below, which keeps them out of the wind-driven rain of a summer storm.
The finish is engineered for sun
The Alunar® coating is a 70% PVDF finish designed and tested to meet AAMA 2605, offered in CRRC-rated colors.
Which profiles and colors does Interlock make?
Five aluminum profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, plus Solid Copper, usually for a bay, a porch roof or a turret. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope.
Colors: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown, Tudor Brown and Sierra Tan. The shingle, slate, shake and tile profiles are covered by ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1790; standing seam is not part of that report.
What warranty comes with an Interlock roof?
- The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty from Interlock Roofing covers material and finish for the original purchaser while they own the home. It transfers once: the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion. Workmanship is excluded.
- The Alunar® coating is warranted 30 years.
- Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.
- Workmanship is covered separately, by the installer. In North Carolina that is the Metal Roof NC 5-Year Labor Warranty, which covers the workmanship of the installation for five years.
- Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly.
How do I know a contractor is an authorized Interlock dealer?
Ask, and check. Ask the contractor in writing whether they are an authorized Interlock dealer, and confirm it with the manufacturer through interlockroofing.com. The manufacturer itself notes that independent installers are not necessarily Interlock-certified.
Then ask how the warranty is issued. Interlock Roofing issues each Guardian warranty with its own certificate number, naming the owner, the property address and the substantial completion date, and the warranty takes effect once the installation contract has been paid in full. Ask the contractor to confirm, before you sign, that your roof will be issued a Guardian certificate, and keep it with your house papers. Read the warranty terms.
Who installs Interlock roofing in North Carolina?
Metal Roof NC, an authorized Interlock aluminum roofing dealer with its office in Raleigh. It installs the Interlock roofing system for homeowners in the Triangle, the Charlotte area, the Triad and Piedmont and the coast, along with Interlock aluminum wall cladding.
The process: Metal Roof NC goes through profiles and colors with you, measures and inspects the roof, and gives you a project-specific estimate before work begins. Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate come off first; a single layer of asphalt may be roofed over only if the inspection finds it suitable and the local code allows it.
Questions, answered

Who installs Interlock roofing in North Carolina?
Metal Roof NC, an authorized Interlock aluminum roofing dealer based in Raleigh, serving the Triangle, the Charlotte area, the Triad and Piedmont, and the North Carolina coast.
How can I check that a roofer is an authorized Interlock dealer?
Ask the contractor to confirm their dealer status in writing, and check it with the manufacturer through interlockroofing.com. Independent installers are not necessarily Interlock-certified, so ask before you sign.
How is the Guardian warranty registered?
Interlock Roofing issues each Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty with its own certificate number, naming the owner, the property address and the substantial completion date. It takes effect once the installation contract has been paid in full. Keep the certificate with your house papers.
Does the Guardian warranty cover installation?
No. It covers material and finish; workmanship is excluded. The installer covers the installation. Metal Roof NC's installations carry the Metal Roof NC 5-Year Labor Warranty.
Is an Interlock roof a good choice on the North Carolina coast?
Aluminum suits the coast because it does not rust in salt air, and the panels lock on four sides with concealed fasteners. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification; parts of the coast are designed for higher wind speeds, and the permit office sets the requirement for each house.
How much does an Interlock roof cost?
Metal Roof NC's rule of thumb is that an Interlock aluminum roof typically costs about 2.5 to 3 times a traditional asphalt-shingle roof. Prices vary job to job with roof size, pitch, tear-off and other conditions, so an on-site estimate is required for an accurate price.
