Interlock makes both: a Standing Seam profile and shingle-style profiles (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile), all in heavy-gauge aluminum.
| Factor | Standing seam | Metal shingles |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Long vertical panels, clean lines; farmhouse, modern, coastal | Slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile look; traditional |
| Oil-canning | Wide flat pans can show slight waviness; cosmetic | Small embossed panels hide it |
| Fasteners | Concealed under the seams | Concealed; Interlock panels lock on four sides |
| Minimum slope (Interlock) | 3/12 | 3/12 |
| Code evaluation | Not covered by ICC-ES ESR-1790 | ICC-ES ESR-1790 covers the shingle, slate, shake and tile profiles |
| HOA approval | Sometimes harder in traditional subdivisions | Often easier; reads as a traditional roof |
Which looks right on a North Carolina house?
Standing seam suits farmhouses, modern infill in Raleigh and Durham, and coastal homes with simple roof lines. Shingle profiles suit brick Colonials, Craftsman and Tudor homes across the Triangle, Charlotte and the Triad, and cottages that once wore cedar.
What is oil-canning, and should I worry?
Oil-canning is a visible waviness in the flat part of a metal panel, most noticeable on wide standing-seam pans in low-angle light. It is cosmetic and does not affect weather-tightness. Narrower pans and striations reduce it; shingle profiles, with small embossed panels, effectively hide it.
Which handles North Carolina storms better?
Both use concealed fasteners. Interlock panels are warranted for wind to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification, and parts of the coast sit in design wind zones of 130 mph and above under the NC Residential Code, where the permit office or engineer sets the requirement. No roof is immune to hurricane damage; see hurricane-resistant roofing.
Does one cost more than the other?
It depends on the roof's shape and size more than the profile. Metal Roof NC's rule of thumb is that an Interlock aluminum roof typically costs about 2.5 to 3 times a traditional asphalt-shingle roof. Prices vary job to job with roof size, pitch, tear-off and other conditions, and an on-site estimate is required for an accurate price. See metal roof cost and Interlock roofing in NC.
Where does Metal Roof NC install?
Across the Triangle, the Charlotte area, the Triad and Piedmont, and the coast: Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Greensboro, Wilmington, New Bern, Morehead City and more. See all service areas.
